Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oncoplastic surgical team & NBIA launch innovative oncoplastic techniques course for surgical trainees

The National Breast Imaging Academy has been working with the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oncoplastic surgical team to develop a brand-new training event – Manchester Oncoplastic Breast Masterclass: Advanced Breast Conservation – a practical, hands-on course designed to support the next generation of breast surgeons in developing their oncoplastic skills.

Taking place on 13 and 14 November 2025 at the National Breast Imaging Academy, the two-day course is aimed at senior surgical trainees, fellows and consultants looking to gain confidence and competence in breast-conserving surgical techniques, implant management, and chest contouring procedures.

This pioneering course marks an important development for the NBIA, expanding its educational offering to include live, surgical skills training.

The programme blends radiological interpretation, practical demonstrations, and real-time feedback to simulate the complexities of modern breast surgery. Participants will learn to interpret breast imaging to inform surgical planning and explore techniques

A highlight of the day will be the use of real patients and volunteers, enabling realistic simulation of marking and surgical planning. A live theatre feed is also planned to further enhance the learning experience, offering a unique window into real-time clinical decision-making.

Commenting on the new course, Mr Nader Tougan, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and course organiser added:

“We designed this course to bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving surgeons the opportunity to refine their skills through hands-on experience. The use of simulated patients and live demonstrations makes this a truly unique learning environment.

Dr Mary Wilson, Consultant Breast Radiologist and NBIA Programme Lead added:

“This course is part of the NBIA’s wider commitment to developing the breast surgical workforce through high-quality, practical education. While short of direct operating experience, the combination of expert-led sessions, patient simulation, and collaborative MDT learning provides valuable preparation for clinical practice.”
