NBIA as a central resource for careers in breast imaging

NBIA as a central resource for careers in breast imaging

With breast cancer being the most common cancer in the UK, the demand for skilled breast imaging professionals continues to grow. The shortage of breast imaging specialists is a national concern, and the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) is dedicated to tackling this issue, including the use of its website as a central resource for anyone interested in pursuing a career in breast imaging.

Breast imaging professionals are essential to both the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic breast services. These experts include radiologists, breast clinicians, radiographers, mammographers, and advanced practitioners, all working together to ensure that high-quality breast imaging services are available across the UK. Their work enables breast cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment and research, all key to saving lives.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr Mary Wilson, Consultant Breast Radiologist and Lead of the NBIA, said:

“In response to the growing need for more specialists, the NBIA is acting as a portal for anyone interested in a career in breast imaging. Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to advance your skills, the NBIA will provide the information and resources you need to explore the different roles within breast imaging. The aim is to create a clear pathway into this rewarding and impactful field.”

The NBIA’s website includes information on:

  • Career pathways: Information on the different roles within breast imaging, from mammography associates to consultant breast radiologists, as well as advice on how to get started in the field.
  • Training opportunities: Details on apprenticeship programmes, postgraduate courses, and specialised training that can help you advance in your career.
  • Support and development: Resources for continuing professional development (CPD), including online learning via the NBIA Academy Online.

There are various career paths within breast imaging, each offering opportunities to make a real difference in patient care:

  • Mammography Associates: Work closely with radiologists and radiographers to carry out routine mammograms, producing high-quality images that aid in early breast cancer detection.
  • Radiographers: Perform imaging procedures and work with advanced technologies to diagnose breast conditions.
  • Enhanced Practitioner, Advanced Practitioners &Consultant Radiographers: Perform a wide range of duties, from biopsies to image reporting, offering a high level of expertise and clinical leadership.
  • Breast clinicians: Specialty and specialist (SAS) doctors working in UK breast services, highly trained in the assessment and management of breast disease.
  • Radiologists: Specialise in interpreting breast images and leading breast care services, playing a key role in both screening and symptomatic breast services.

Dr Wilson added:

“The NBIA’s mission is to ensure the UK has a strong, skilled breast imaging workforce, helping to meet the demands of the NHS and provide the best possible care for patients. By serving as a central hub for career information, training, and resources, the NBIA is making it easier for people to pursue and progress in a career in breast imaging.”
