NBIA Breast Clinician Credential goes from strength to strength

NBIA Breast Clinician Credential goes from strength to strength

The National Breast Imaging Academy’s Credential in Breast Disease Management is making a significant contribution across England, strengthening the breast imaging workforce, supporting multidisciplinary teams, and offering a rewarding new career route for doctors.

Developed by the Association of Breast Clinicians (ABC), the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) and NHS England, the programme provides a structured, clinically rich pathway for doctors working toward specialist roles in breast services.

Breast Clinicians completing the Credential develop expertise in:

  • symptomatic and screening breast radiology, including image-guided intervention
  • clinical skills in surgical breast clinics and
  • risk assessment and management in family history and genetics services.

The programme offers a defined training pathway, scope of practice and national consistency in training. Through the Credential, Breast Clinicians become independent practitioners able to prove a holistic approach to the investigation and management of breast disease.

Commenting on the Credential, Dr Caroline Parkin, Consultant Breast Radiologist and NBIA Lead for the Breast Clinician Credential programme said:

“The Credential is already making a tangible difference to breast services across the NHS. We’ve seen doctors from a wide variety of backgrounds progress through the programme and go on to secure ongoing employment in the NHS nationwide.”

Dr Parkin added:

“We encourage breast units across England to consider the credential as an opportunity to strengthen local services, expand diagnostic capacity, and help shape the future breast clinician workforce.”

Successful host sites will be supported to recruit locally, with training delivered under the guidance of the Credential Oversight Board.
