There is a severe shortage of academic breast radiologists, so in recognition of this, the NBIA secured funding from NHS England to support a specific academic radiologist role. The NBIA has worked collaboratively with Dr Simon Lowes, Dr Nisha Sharma, and Dr Sarah Vinnicombe to develop and pilot an academic fellowship scheme.
The first academic fellow commenced in post at Gateshead Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in January 2025. The fellow will be in post for 2 years, and will complete an MD, which will be awarded by the University of Newcastle.
If this pilot is successful, recurrent funding will be sought to recruit one academic fellow every two years.
